What is a detox - a doctor, a dummy or an enemy of your health?
About detoxification in beauty blogs and magazines write at least, than about diets. It has become fashionable to sit on fresh juice, green cocktails and smoothies, seize them with goji berries and chia seeds. But does it have an effect, does it harm health? What is detox in general? We understand further.
What is detox and detoxification?
In medicine, the term "detox" does not exist, but there is a complete term - "detoxification". By this they mean the purification of the body (natural or artificial) from severe poisoning with toxic substances. This is the way alcohol and drug addiction, poisoning and side effects from drugs are treated with poisoning with heavy metals, fertilizers, household chemicals, etc.
Detox is an abbreviation of a medical term, the meaning of which was twisted for the sake of marketing: the sonorous word was quickly put into circulation, and now it is written about in every fashion magazine, where they offer to cleanse the body of toxins from fast food, cosmetics, bad water, etc. P.
Thus, various detox smoothies and cocktails, juices, superfoods and nutritional supplements, specifically aimed at cleansing the body, appeared on the mass market. However, the very idea of such a daily detox has long been sent to the dump of medical history. In the end, what a detox really is is just a pseudo-medical concept.
Why the importance of detox is a fallacy
Long since man has become a victim of the idea that we must get rid of some dangerous substances in our bodies in order to become cleaner, lighter and healthier. In the same ancient Egypt, doctors believed that toxic substances themselves are produced in the human body, in particular in the products of its vital activity. And it was believed that toxins are the cause of diseases, and therefore they must be removed from the body. This phenomenon of self-education of toxins was called "auto-intoxication." And the belief in this medical doctrine persisted right up to the 20th century!
However, by the early 1900s, our understanding of physiology had developed, and scientists finally abandoned the idea of autointoxication. Dear Professor of the University of Exeter, Dr. Edzard Ernst, confidently declares: “The body does not need help in detoxification.There are no known methods to help the body get rid of unwanted substances better than it does on its own. " But this does not prevent the cunning marketers from continuing to sell the idea that we can be healthier if we use special products for detoxification.
What is interesting: sellers of detox cocktails, nutritional supplements and superfoods often do not even know what detox is and what it fights against.
For example, in 2007, one such curious investigation was conducted, organized by the American research and advocacy group Sense About Science. The participants contacted the manufacturers of various products aimed at detox-cleansing, and called them to answer about what, in their opinion, detoxification of the body is, and what toxins it saves. And even under pressure, none of these fighters for a pure organism could give an unequivocal answer to the questions posed.

How our body cleans itself
As we said above, official medicine rejects the concept of detox, and for a reason. It has long been known that a whole range of our organs - from the skin, liver, kidneys, and up to the intestines with the lungs - perfectly copes with the purification of all sorts of harmful substances on their own. But ordinary life, we do not notice. But if a person is poisoned with an expired meal or wakes up in the morning with a hangover, he feels that this is true: all body systems start working to get rid of those excesses that make you feel bad. For example, the liver has special enzymes that convert toxic substances into an intermediate form, and then completely neutralize. The kidneys, in turn, independently get rid of unwanted elements and waste, being a part of the process of urine formation.
In the absence of disease, these processes occur automatically: we simply live, and we do not need external assistance to start the body cleansing from the side. It has not yet been proven that any supplement, tea, special water or diet in some way replaces this function.Even more than that: what is now called detox here and there is harmful to our health.
“Detox empties your intestines,” says Dr. Ernst. - And this can disrupt the electrolyte balance of a person and lower it to a dangerously low level. Already it became known about the occurrence of intestinal perforations due to "detox", and deaths. In fact, detox and its attendant food austerity do nothing useful, except for excretion of excrement from the body, which can easily be removed without it. ”
Can the body be cleansed
If you are interested in what detox is, because your health has deteriorated, for example, because of overeating during the holidays, then there are only a few things that can improve your health and perhaps even improve your long-term health indicators. This is a healthy night's sleep, avoiding alcohol, exercise and a balanced diet. There is only one drawback: these things are already known to everyone, and in the usual wrapper you can’t sell them to bored consumers. They are not sold in the form of a magic pill, and usually require longer-term commitments,than a new-fashioned week-long detoxification, but they give a more understandable and effective result without bullying your body.
