St. Catherine pray for a successful marriage?

On December 7, the Orthodox celebrate the feast day of the saint, who was still considered the benchmark of wisdom and beauty in mortality. The most prominent suitors were married to her, but she refused to get married, eventually devoting herself entirely to God. This saint was the great martyr Catherine. Many stories and legends are associated with her veneration, she is also often called the patroness of girls who want to get married. In this article we will understand where the line between the truth and popular ideas.

Saint Catherine - icon

Smart and beautiful

Saint Catherine was born in 287 in the city of Alexandria. She had a noble origin: the father of the righteous was the ruler of the city. Even on Orthodox icons, she is depicted with a crown on her head - a symbol of royal power. The girl's mother was a secret Christian.

At birth, the girl received the name Dorothea, and in fact Catherine became after baptism. More on this will be discussed below.

Before the adoption of Christianity, the girl devoted all her time to education. It must be said that Alexandria, the center of the Hellenistic culture, and the position of the father in society as well as possible contributed to this. Dorothea knew several languages, well studied medicine, the works of many pagan philosophers of the time, as well as rhetoric and dialectics.

In addition, the girl had an extraordinary external beauty. Many young men saw her as their wife, but Dorothea refused to everyone. When her relatives began to insist that it was time for her to get married, the girl said she did not see a candidate equal to her in mind and beauty.

Somehow affect the daughter of the mother asked authoritative for her old man. Suggest that it was a certain Syrian hermit. He told Dorothea that he knew one Young Man, Who even surpasses her. The girl did not understand that they were talking about Christ, and asked the elder to introduce her to the worthy Bridegroom.

Then the hermit gave her an icon of the Virgin and Child and offered to pray. At home, the girl asked the Most Pure One to show her the Groom. In the night vision, Dorothea saw the Virgin Mary with Jesus. But Christ turned away from her. Why? Because the girl was not yet a Christian. Moreover, she became stupefied in her pride, proud of her education and beauty.

No matter how the Most Pure Son asked, He did not show the girl his face anyway.

Alarmed, Dorothea ran to her mentor the very next day. He opened for her the foundations of Christianity and then baptized. So the girl got the name Catherine known to us.

Then she saw another unusual dream: the Virgin Mary and Christ appeared to her. This time Jesus did not turn away and gave St. Catherine a ring - as a sign of a betrothal to God. Since that time, the girl did not remove the ring and openly recognized herself as a Christian.

Why is Saint Catherine the Great Martyr?

When Emperor Maximin arranged a feast with animal sacrifices in honor of the pagan gods, the girl openly denounced the ruler. The future martyr Catherine told him about the true God who should be worshiped.

Struck by the appearance of Catherine, the emperor gently asked not to interfere, but it is also best to bow to idols. But the persistent refusal of Catherine led him into a rage. For this the girl was put in prison.

Since Saint Catherine was of noble birth, the wife of the Emperor Augustus secretly visited her.A conversation with a young Christian struck her so much that the woman believed in God, but so far she hid her views from her husband.

Catherine's oratorical talent: 50 pagan rhetoric became Christians

For the open confession of Christianity at that time, it was first tried and then executed to death. Maximin was sorry to kill the extraordinarily beautiful Catherine. He gathered the 50 best speakers of the time and asked them to convince the damsel in her religious “delusion”.

But St. Catherine, supported by God's grace, was the best speaker. Hearing her fiery speech about the true God, 50 philosophers acknowledged their defeat and expressed a desire to become Christians. For Maximian, this was the last straw. For such audacity, he believed, Catherine deserved a painful death.

Great Martyr Crown

The icon of the Great Martyr Catherine is often depicted with a wheel. It symbolizes the instrument of torture saint. Four round wheels with sharp iron spikes, rotating in different directions, were to cut the girl's body into pieces. But the Angel of the Lord crushed the instrument of torment.

It would seem that seeing this, Maximin should have been terrified and believed in the power of God. But he became even more hardened. Even the prayers of his wife had no effect on him.And when Augusta declared her Christian views, an angry husband ordered her to be killed. That is why, on the same day, together with St. Catherine, in the Orthodox calendar, the martyr Augustus is also remembered - the very wife of the governor, who suffered for the open confession of faith.

Following Augustus, she died for Christ and the Great Martyr Catherine. Maximin no longer excelled in torture instruments and ordered the Christian to be beheaded. So the saint exchanged the royal crown for the martyr's crown.

Where are the holy relics?

Over the next several centuries, Christians could not find the power of the Great Martyr. The remains of the saint were on Mount Sinai. According to legend, holy angels buried her there.

Only in the 6th century did the Sinai monks find the righteous remains and recognize them precisely by the ring that the saint received from the Savior.

Catherine's Ring

In our time, the relics of Catherine the Great Martyr - the right hand and the head - are located in the Sinai Monastery, named after her. Pilgrims who come to pray over the tomb of the saint receive an unusual ring with a picture of the heart and the inscription "Saint Catherine".

Prayer for unmarried girls?

In connection with the story of the Heavenly Bridegroom and the ring from the Savior, the Great Martyr Catherine is considered the intercessor of girls who want to start a family. But this does not mean at all that the saint does not respond to other petitions addressed to her.

In the Orthodox Prayer Book you can find the text of the prayer to St. Catherine:

O Saint Catherine, virgin and martyr, true bride of Christ! We ask you, especially grace, before your Bridegroom, Sweet Jesus, who received it: as if you had shamed the torturer’s deceptions with your wisdom, thou hast defeated the fifty thirds, and gave them the heavenly teachings to the light of true faith, you, and you will be given the way to get to the light of the way, and you will be given this way and you will be able to use the same pattern and you will be given the way to get the figure and you will be given the way to get the way and you will be given this way and you will be given this way and you will be given this way and you will be able to get to the light of the way. yes and we, all the intrigues of the hellish tormentor are more divorced, and the world and the flesh are tempted to despise, deserve the Divine glory, and for the expansion of our holy Orthodox faith, make us dignified, and with you in the heavenly tabernacle of the Lord and our Lord Jesus Christ from O With tzm and the Holy Spirit we will praise and glorify all ages. Amen.
