Heat pumps - problems and prospects

In 2006, together with the Insolar company, Kharkov, the ground heat pump was installed, installed and started up at the Zalyutino railway station of the Kharkiv Southern Railway. The uniqueness of this installation lies in the fact that the customer, represented by the Construction and Installation Service and civil structures of the Southern Railway, provided a separate power supply line and energy consumption metering for the heating system at the heat pump. Due to this we can analyze the objective results of the system over a long period.

Prior to the installation of the heat pump in 2006, heating of the passenger railway station Zalyutino was carried out by two coal-fired boilers with a rating of 50 kW each. Coal consumption was 67 tons, operating costs for the boiler were 68 thousand.hryvnia for the heating season. The quality of heating was very low - the temperature in the offices did not rise above 12-14 ° C, there was no air conditioning and hot water.

At the end of 2006, the station's heat supply system was transferred to a heat pump, with simultaneous installation of an air-conditioning system in the office premises of the station.

Payments for all design work, equipment, installation and commissioning, including air conditioning, amounted to 320 thousand hryvnia. Of these, the cost of the heat pump, hot water boiler and air-conditioning module produced by the Swedish company NIBE amounted to 108 thousand hryvnias, or about 34% of the total cost of modernization. The price only for the heat pump was 86 thousand hryvnia, or 27% of the total cost of modernization.

A heat pump with a capacity of 40 kW of Swedish production and an electric boiler with a capacity of 10 kW of Ukrainian production for operation in a bivalent mode were installed to heat the station. The total heating capacity of 50 kW on the heat pump allowed replacing two coal-fired boilers with a total rating of 100 kW.

The operating costs in 2007 for heat supply to the station with a heat pump amounted to 43,845 kWh of electricity in the amount of UAH 14 907 907.

In 2007, the heat pump worked on the heat supply of the building of the passenger station. In 2008, the neighboring ED building (control room) was additionally connected to this heat supply system, which led to an increase in electricity consumption for the operation of the heat pump to 19 thousand hryvnia. At the same time, the coal boiler room of the dispatch building was liquidated.

Railway workers estimate the work of the heat pump positively - 50 kW of power of the system with a heat pump is abundant enough to meet the needs of two station buildings. With regard to economic indicators: during the heating season, the heat pump can save up to 110 thousand hryvnia, and in 2006, the design, purchase and installation of the installation amounted to about 300 thousand hryvnia.

1. Annual operating costs in 2007–2008 for heating, hot water supply and air conditioning amounted to 15–19 thousand hryvnias per year, which is 3.5–4.0 times less than the costs for heating only the premises of the Zalyutino railway station in 2006 .

2One system solved the problem of comfortable heating and air conditioning (the temperature in the office space is maintained at 18–20 ° C in winter, 22–24 ° C in summer), as well as hot water supply.

3. Environmental issues have been fundamentally resolved, since emissions of combustion products into the atmosphere are completely excluded, and the need for the removal and disposal of slag is eliminated.

In this example, the price of the heat pump in the total cost of upgrading the heating system was only 27%. From our experiencethe price of a ground source heat pump is between 25 and 50% of the total cost of the boiler house at the heat pump. The rest is made up of so-called minor works and materials - hundreds and thousands of meters of earthworks and polyethylene pipes laid in the ground, tons of non-freezing fluid of an external collector, etc.

Thus, if we suddenly start distributing the heat pump to passers-by on the street for free, it will not provide a multiple increase in the number of operating heat pumps. Having received a heat pump for free, people will still be forced to pay a large amount, for the majority of Ukrainian citizens, an unaffordable amount from their own pocket to connect it.

Based on the price ratio for a heat pump, which constitutes about a third of the cost of a boiler house for a heat pump, in general, one can formulate a general economic criterion for choosing a heat pump: if heat pump A is 10% less efficient than heat pump B, then heat pump A should be 33% cheaper than heat pump B.
10% efficiency of the heat pump = 33% of the price of the heat pump.

This raises the question of the efficiency of the heat pump. Now in Ukraine the distribution in terms of heat pumps has become widespread. Some novice sellers of heat pumps, including those made in China, have begun to declare efficiency that is superior to world leaders. To date, only electrical safety can be certified in Ukraine, but there are no regulations or standards to evaluate and compare the efficiency of the heat pump. Of course, the market must have offers of equipment of different efficiencies, manufacturers and countries of origin, but the Ukrainian consumer has the primary right to receive objective and honest information, especially about the effectiveness of such expensive equipment as a heat pump.Deception of consumers has become possible and essentially unpunished due to the absence in Ukraine of national standards for verification and confirmation of the effectiveness of heat pumps. Such a deception in the long run discredits the technology of heat pumps, leaves Ukraine in the Stone Age.

To support the development of heat pumps in Ukraine, the state should officially translate international and European standards for determining their effectiveness.Then the seller will be able to confirm the efficiency of the heat pump, if desired, and the buyer will intelligently choose the best equipment for him.

The terms when the state legalizes international standards for confirming the efficiency of a heat pump determine the prospects for heat pumps in Ukraine.
