1983 Whalen-Murmansk on dogs. A fantastic trip along the coast of the Arctic Ocean

After reading a few years ago about the three-year trip of foreigners on the way from Cape North Cape to Whalen, dog sleds wondered who had first overcome this route and when. It turned out that in 1982-1983. This path, only in the opposite direction, was made by the Soviet expedition of the Ural branch of the Academy of Sciences.

The path length of 10,000 km

On November 6, 1982, from the Cape Uelen, located on the Chukotka Peninsula, in the extreme east of Eurasia on the banks of the Bering Strait, dividing the continents of Eurasia and North America, six travelers set off on a dog sled, heading west. In addition to its leader, S. Samoilov, a researcher at the Ural Branch of the Academy of Sciences, it included P. Ardeev, Y. Borysikhin, V. Karpov, V. Rybin and P. Smolin.

For the first time it was necessary to overcome a long journey of 10 thousand km, moving west along the Arctic shores of Russia up to Murmansk. And all this in the conditions of the harsh Arctic winter with its frosts, often with heavy winds, and partially in the polar night. However, the best time was chosen for the expedition. After all, in the summer, due to the countless swamps, lakes and rivers devoid of ice cover, and clouds of annoying and predatory gnat insects, it would be impossible to be here, and at the same time overcome such great distances.

ATVs such a long journey would not have survived, besides, would need a huge supply of fuel. Therefore, the most reliable and reliable mode of transport was chosen - dog sleds. But how will these faithful animals behave in conditions of prolonged constant movement? The circumstances were complicated by the fact that typical citizens, members of the expeditionary detachment, with the exception of P. Ardeev, did not have any experience in managing narts. But people and dogs quickly became friends and understood each other well.

As full members of the expedition, animals together with people courageously overcame all the difficulties that arose during an unusual journey.Travelers traveled a significant part of the journey on foot, helping the dogs in difficult sections of the route to carry heavy sledges, and when the snow reached the chest, and the frost reached -45 ° C, they skied ahead, paving the way for dog sleds.

In one of these transitions, a special insulating mask froze so hard on the face of the group doctor V. Rybina that she had to take it off ... along with her skin. At times, when the visibility at arm's length completely disappeared due to the snowy whirlwind, the dogs were rescued. Taking advantage of the experience of the local population, the members of the expedition ate the same food all the time: they ate raw strugan fish, walrus, seals, and seals. Even at a temperature of -46 degrees Celsius and winds of 24-25 meters per second, they never used tents and slept together with the animals in the open air, burying, where possible, in the snow. But it did not always save from the cold. Already in about an hour, I had to get up and dance the traditional tap dance.

In addition, all the time it was necessary to take care of the dogs, powder them with a snow blanket so as not to freeze, examine whether any of them were confused in the ditches, or simply support them with caress. And so it is nightly. With several “dance breaks” and concern for the “smaller brothers”, travelers slept only 3-4 hours. Once in a brutal blizzard they had to lie in the snow for more than a day and a half - 38 full hours! To carry the frost well helped clothing from the skins - Nenets Malitsa. However, despite the difficulties of this campaign, none of the travelers was not sick.

In order for the dogs not to hurt their paws on hard icy snowy Nastya, they often had to be “shoved” in special soft boots. And with the onset of relative heat at the last stage of the journey from the mouth of the Pechora, it was necessary to change the sledges to special carts on wheels. Water barriers overcome in an inflatable boat. White Sea swam on the boat.

The main scientific objective of the expedition was biomedical research of the condition of people and animals in extreme conditions, when they were constantly under the open sky in months of transitions. Therefore, the expedition members systematically kept diaries and observations of the behavior of their comrades and dogs.

Taking on July 4, 1983 in Murmansk, a report on the successful completion of the transcontinental campaign, the head of the organizing committee and the inspirer of this expedition, the famous polar explorer, the doctor of geographical sciences I. D. Papanin, noted the special courage of its participants. Indeed, after passing for 8 months (240 days) 10,000 km, i.e., almost half of the polar circle from the extreme east to the west along the arctic shores of our country, and courageously enduring difficulties, young enthusiasts showed extraordinary determination in achieving the goal and continued their heroic traditions of Russian explorers.

Such a long transition, and even in adverse, harsh conditions of the Arctic, has not been carried out by any expedition before. The transcontinental campaign, as well as the hikes on the ice of the Arctic Ocean of the group of D. Shparo, expanded the idea of human capabilities.

From myself I will add that probably everybody who at least once visited the Arctic Circuit sooner or later seeks to go there again - to test oneself, to feel the icy breath of the Pole, to appreciate simple human joys.
